Good performance - hate the cable July 6, 2009

The product arrived on time and was fairly easy to set up.
Even though the weight of the mower is on the lighter side, the frame is a little huge.
But I’ve used it about 4 or 5 times till today and it has done the job.
The cable is the worst part and I lose a lot of time in moving it out of the way. In hindsight maybe I should have put in some extra money and bought a wireless.

Spraying the blade with PAM certainly helps..:) ..never thought i’d use it that way tho..

All in all, it does the job, so it could be a good buy(except the cable part) for someone on a budget…

Will update this review, if I see issues with the mower…

Good first impressions…. June 18, 2009

My 18-yr old Ariens lawnmower has just about bitten the dust. The deck rusted through and I had to resort to duct tape to patch it up. So I started to research lawn mowers and saw this model at the top of the electric push mower ratings in Consumer Reports. I checked with my wife (to avoid the potential ‘I told you so’ - moment), and got her blessing to go electric.

We have less than 5000 sq ft of lawn, and today, I tried it out for the first time. First impressions count in my book; but, I do plan to update this review if required. I bought a 14-gauge, 100 ft extension cord, which turns out to be just enough to reach the far corners of my property, with only 2 outlets required (one for the back, one for the front). I was tempted to buy a cord reel, or some device to wind the cord, but that is not necessary, since it’s best just to flop the cord pile on the the lawn and let it feed out on its own. My biggest surprise was that the cord was not a problem as long as you ‘mow away’ from the outlet source. The only thing you need to change is the mowing pattern; no more ’round-the-perimeter-mowing. Instead, a back and forth pattern is more efficient, to avoid cord issues. In fact, I’ll venture to say that it might take a bit longer to mow using this pattern since you seem to be turning a lot more.

Another pleasant surprise was the mulching power of this mower. I had it set pretty low and found very few ‘grass tracks’ that my old mower always left behind. This mower pulverizes the grass clippings very efficiently. Now we’ll see if this keeps up as the blade gets duller.

Other plusses, the relative quietness, no smelly exhaust fumes, the light weight of the mower. It is very easy to push and maneuver. I’ll use the bag in the Fall to pick up the mulched leaves that we distribute through the garden. Clean up afterward is another thing that is different. You cannot hose off the bottom of the deck, instead the grass must be wiped away with a paper towel. I spray WD40 on the bottom of the deck, and there was very little to wipe off. We’ll see how long this baby lasts, but right now, I’m pretty satisfied.
